• How do you ace the interview and impress the hiring manager in your new field?

  One of the biggest mistakes I see candidates make is overdoing it in the thank you note. That is NOT the time to sell yourself. Avoid recapping your experience and going on about why you are a good fit. A thank you note should be short and focus on it's true intent: giving thanks for the opportunity. i.e. Thank you for taking the time to meet with me about the ___ opportunity with your company. I really enjoyed talking with you about the ___ and ___ aspects of the role. Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide to further my candidacy. • How do you demonstrate resilience and adaptability in a post-layoff interview?

  When asked, "Why did you leave your last job?" in this scenario, I always suggest you start your answer with, "I'm glad you asked." That simple phrase sets the interviewer up for a positive response. Then, explain as objectively as you can (keep emotions & opinions about how the layoff went down out of it). It might sound like this: "I'm glad you asked, I was one of __ number of employees impacted by the recent restructuring of the business. I learned a lot there, so I'm excited to be speaking with you about this role and how I can take the knowledge and skills I gained while working there to provide the most value I can in this position." This shows you're ready to move on!

• How do you develop and share your thought leadership and expertise online for outplacement?

  I encourage you to start with "curating" content. Find articles and videos that you've personally found interesting and valuable and then share them in your LinkedIn feed with a short explanation as to why you found them so helpful. Be specific! Sharing helpful resources is one of the BEST way to serve your network and it doesn't take as much time as actually creating your own articles and videos from scratch. Plus, it gives you the chance to shine the light on the other people's work. So, don't forget to tag them so they see you've spotlighted them in your feed. PS - This can be a super way to get a networking conversation going with these content authors in your industry as well!

• How do you handle challenges or conflicts that arise during the mentoring process?

  For me it's about: A) getting deeply (and objectively!) curious as to where the Mentee's emotion is coming from, AND B) taking ownership and being accountable for how the Mentee's mindset ended up where it is. i.e. what mis-assumptions does the Mentee have about the situation that the Mentor could have helped avoid.
